Monday, May 13, 2024 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
On Monday, May 13 the University of South Carolina's Rice School of Law will host a Tax Clinic at Richland Library in the Social Work Department, located on the 3rd floor.
Though taxes are typically due each year on or just after April 15th , and there is a three-year window in which taxes can be filed. Due to the global pandemic, the IRS extended the 2020 tax filing deadline to May 17, 2021, which means there is still an opportunity for anyone who has not yet filed their 2020 tax return to get a refund of their withholdings, estimated taxes, refundable credits or missed stimulus checks.
“Many people may not realize that this is the last opportunity to get their 2020 refund, including stimulus payments, they may be entitled to,” says Clint Wallace, associate professor of law and director of the Tax Clinic at the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law. “Time is running out, and the Tax Clinic is here to help.”
To qualify for assistance, your household income must fall below 250 percent of the federal poverty level ($37,650 for a single person, $78,000 for a family of four). In addition to filing assistance for prior tax years, the Tax Clinic is also available to help taxpayers understand and manage tax issues, like balances due and tax audits.
“Our goal is to help people resolve their IRS tax problems.” Wallace says.
